so what if you were to take a header and cut it off about 8 inches down and make each header go to a seperate exhaust? like the title says this is a what if im not gonna do this nor do i advocate it (mostly because it would look retarded) but in theory would it work? would it make more over a regular header+single exhaust?

No it wouldnt make more power, and it would add A LOT of weight to the vehicle, nor is there enough space under the car to do it.
Since all the cylinders dont fire at once, it's basically like they each have their own pipe anyways.

Look at a 4-1 exhaust, closest thing that works to your idea.

Since we only have one bank, and the cylinders don't fire at the same time, we only need a short length of pipe before they merge and effectively only need a single pipe (basically what sleepyG said). Having individual exhaust pipes would add a whole lot of weight than simply having a single, large pipe (of the same cross-section as the combined smaller pipes). Since the area of a circle is Area=pi*(radius squared), going from a 2 inch pipe (about stock exhaust size, too small) to a 4 inch pipe (effing huge and unnecessary on our engines) would not double the cross section, it would quadruple it (A=1*pi for the 2 inch vs A=4*pi for the 4 in).
I kind of want a dual exhaust though(I like how they look), but even for that it would not make sense to run two pipes all the way back. The big benefit there would be in getting to run two fairly quiet mufflers (like WS2's or a similarly quiet design) that would normally not make as much power, and still get the flow (and power) of a more free flowing but loud muffler at the expense of additional weight.

I like how duals look too but my friend had a shop do a dual setup on his sedan and they had to beat the shit out of the spare tire well so there was room for the muffler. even though the carpet hides it, I just dont think I could do that to my car...

you would loose power.

This idea is terrible. Possibly more terrible than a quad retro setup. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c400/Mechtroop/Emoticons/salook.gif

indeed. it would sound cool if you had one loud muffler and one quiet one though. probably a bit like a wrx. but can you say horrible exhaust scavenging?
